CAPT Brian Bourgeois passed away on December 7, 2021, after sustaining injuries during training in Virginia Beach, VA.

CAPT Bourgeois received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in May 2001 and served the Navy and Naval Special Warfare community for over 20 years as a Navy SEAL. He was a four-year member of the Navy football team and earned three varsity letters.

When describing CAPT Bourgeois, Rear Adm. H.W. Howard III said, “Brian was one of our very best leaders, who possessed all the attributes that make our force effective. We will miss his charismatic leadership and faithful stewardship of our standard.”

CAPT Bourgeois also earned a Masters in Defense Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and received the Pat Tillman Leadership Award while at NPS.

CAPT Bourgeois was serving as the Commanding Officer of SEAL Team 8 at the time of his death.

On October 19th, 2022, it was announced that the Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, posthumously promoted CDR Bourgeois to the rank of Captain. “The loss of Brian is still felt throughout the Naval Special Warfare community,” said Rear Adm. Keith Davids, commander, Naval Special Warfare Command. “His promotion to captain is an absolute testament to his character, competence, and leadership. Brian was one of our very best leaders, who possessed all the attributes that make our force effective. He led by example, was a terrific teammate, and a committed father, husband, and friend.”
