MIDN 3/C Duke A. Carrillo (USNA '22)

from $35.00

Duke was lost on February 8, 2020, after collapsing during the last portion of the semi-annual physical readiness test.

He was a native of Flower Mound, Texas. At Flower Mound High School, he was a three-year varsity letterman in football and wrestling and captained both teams. He attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island in 2018 before joining the Naval Academy class of 2022. As a Quantitative Economics major, Carrillo earned high marks including a 4.0 GPA in this last semester, according to literature handed out at his services.

"He worked his entire life with a constant goal to serve his country," according to a memorial pamphlet. "Duke was fiercely loyal with the strength of a giant and the tenderness of a teddy bear."

For every MIDN 3/C Duke Carrillo bracelet sold, proceeds will be donated to the Midshipman Duke Carrillo Foundation.

From The New York Post:

“My wife, Joanne, and I join the Brigade, staff and faculty in mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Midshipman Duke Carrillo,” Vice Adm. Sean Buck, superintendent of the Naval Academy, said in a statement. “Our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to the entire Carrillo family, and our extended Naval Academy family, during this extremely difficult time.”

Carrillo, a sophomore set to graduate in 2022, attended the Naval Academy with his twin brother, Dylan, and his younger brother, Jake. The avid intramural athlete hoped to become a naval aviator and was a quantitative economics major with a 4.0 grade-point average last semester, officials said.

“Duke was an active member of 24th company; he was able to have a special and close relationship with each of his classmates and company mates,” 24th Company Officer Lt. Sara Lewis said in a statement Sunday. “I am honestly able to say he was friends with everyone and uplifted those around him. Due to his calm and loving personality, he will be especially missed in 24th company.”

Carrillo was also featured in a 2012 report on the Eagle Scouts by the Dallas Morning News. Then 13, Carrillo was praised for designing, building and installing wooden tables at an outdoor area for Lewisville Independent School District, the newspaper reported.

Carrillo is survived by his parents, Gerald and Jennifer, and his brothers.
