1st Lt Edward Solomon (USAFA '71)

On December 7th, 1974, 1st Lt Edward Solomon attempted to land at a small plane crash site to rescue survivors about forty-five miles south-east of Anchorage, Alaska. As the HH-3E came to a hover it encountered ‘white out’ conditions causing the HH-3E to crash, tragically killing Lt Solomon. The remaining HH-3E crew members survived and were rescued. Lt Solomon was attached to the 5040th Helicopter Squadron at Elmendorf AFB, AK.

      Ed was born on October 27th, 1948, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and grew up in Andrews, Texas. Ed attended Andrews High School and was a well-rounded athlete and student. He was a linebacker for his high school football team, and a state track runner.

      Ed was survived by his wife Catherine (Solomon) Moellers, his daughter Jenifer (Solomon) Mattox, and his son Zack Solomon. His military legacy includes his son COL Zack Solomon, US Army; his grandson 2d Lt William Solomon, US Air Force; and his grandson Cadet Bennett Solomon, USMA at West Point.
